13. Do you want a first dance song that is a little different?

Are you struggling deciding on a suitable first dance song for your wedding? Have you trawled through Google to find lists of the most popular first dance songs but found you’re still finding it really difficult to pinpoint that special tune? If so, don’t worry – there are many more options than the tried and tested favourites which always appear in these lists!

Don’t get us wrong – those songs appear on these lists for a reason. They are all amazing and we cover a significant number of them in our wedding ceremony / breakfast / cocktail reception set. We’ve listed some of the more popular songs in our free guide to wedding music, which you can find and download via this link. Some of the hugely popular options include:

  • A Thousand Years (Christina Perri)
  • Amazed (Lonestar)
  • All of Me (John Legend)
  • Marry Me (Train)
  • Make You Feel My Love (Adele)
  • At Last (Etta James)
  • Perfect (Ed Sheeran)
  • Can’t Help Falling In Love (Elvis Presley)
  • Thinking Out Loud (Ed Sheeran)
  • First Day Of My Life (Bright Eyes)
  • I Won’t Give Up (Jason Mraz)
  • Better Together (Jack Johnson)
  • Everything (Michael Buble)

You can find more popular first dance choices in our guide though there are many more to consider, especially if you want to be a little different from the norm! We recently recorded a few songs to share via social media over the coming months and one which really stood out was Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shivers’. You can find a snippet of our video version by clicking on this link. We chose this one to share first as it’s recent, it’s a great song and we really do think it would make a great first dance choice, especially when you listen closely to some of the lyrics:

I wanna be that guy, I wanna kiss your eyes.
I wanna drink that smile, I wanna feel like I’m
Like my soul’s on fire, I wanna stay up all day and all night
Yeah, you got me singing’ like

You know you could tear me apart (ooh)
Put me back together and take my heart
I never thought that I could love this hard
Ooh, I can’t get enough

We think they’re fantastic lyrics for a first dance! A little different but absolutely the right sentiments for the moment.

Other songs which certainly fall into this ‘alternative first dance’ category include:

  • Al Green & Annie Lennox – Put A Little Love In Your Heart
  • The Beatles – And I Love Her
  • Ben Howard – Only Love
  • Beyonce – Love On Top (We have just learned this one for a wedding ceremony!)
  • Billie Eilish – Ocean Eyes
  • Bob Marley – Is This Love
  • The Cranberries – Dreams
  • Drake and Rihanna – Take Care
  • Harry Styles – Adore You

  • Lana Del Ray – Young And Beautiful
  • Little Shoes Big Voice – Little Things Mean A Lot (One of our absolute faves!)
  • The Lottery Winners – Something To Leave The House For (Check it out if you don’t know it – a beautiful song)
  • Louis Armstrong -What A Wonderful World
  • Michael Jackson – The Way You Make Me Feel
  • Michelle Gayle – Sweetness
